Studying > Tips
Sick of drinking endless cups of coffee and pulling all-nighters before your big exam?
Leading up to exams, we often run “study preparation sessions” with tips from senior residents on time management, revision techniques and how to deal with exam stress.
Try a few of the following simple tips:
- Plan a study and assignment calendar so you don’t get behind… or at least not too far behind!
- Start early in the semester! Last minute cramming isn’t as effective as learning steadily through the year and then reviewing just before exams.
- Make a “to do” list at the beginning of each study session. This way you can make the best use of your time.
- Have a well-organised study area – so you spend more time learning information than looking for it!
- It is easier to recall information in the same type of environment that you learned it in the first place. In other words, it’s better to study in a quiet, distraction-free environment – since it’s highly unlikely your next exam will have a TV or radio playing as “background noise”!
- Get hold of any past exam papers you can find.
- Take regular 5-10 minute breaks every 45-60 minutes to refresh – get up and go for a walk.
- Take it easy on the caffeine and energy drinks such as Red Bull – they provide a short term boost but too much can also cause sleeping difficulties and make it hard to concentrate once they wear off. A walk or even a light workout before studying will give the same effect without the side-effects.
